Misinformation regarding the current laws governing BOTOX administration
The Arizona Dental Association has been monitoring social media regarding misinformation that is being shared—indicating that under current Arizona law, dental hygienists can inject Botulinum Toxin and dermal fillers.
This is false.
While this claim might just be dental team members who are misinformed, it is a gross misrepresentation of the Arizona Attorney General's opinion.
The simplified version of what's gone on to this point is that the Attorney General said R-11-601 would allow hygienists to give injectables if four criteria were met. They also said that it is not within the Attorney General's prevue to determine if injectables are reversible or irreversible. They kicked it back to the State Board of Dental Examiners (BODEX) to make the determination. However, BODEX has not rendered an opinion as of yet (which might not happen before the 2025 legislative session).
Your license is in jeopardy if you allow your hygienist to give injectables prior to legislation that would clearly give them authorization to perform this increased scope of practice.
